Tell us about the story and why you made 'Sweet Like Lemons'?

I had come out of an unhealthy relationship and was working through complex and contradicting emotions. The film was a way for me to make sense of my feelings and thoughts. I wanted to create an animated version of "a letter you're never meant to send" - the idea being that the protagonist over the course of the film learns to accept that she will never get the closure she feels she deserves from the other person as she can't control them, but she can control herself, and  choose to close this chapter of her life and move on.

With the film being a hand painted animation, can you tell us about your creative process? How long does it take?

My process has changed to more traditional filmmaking with my latest film Dollhosue Elephant (2025), but with Sweet Like Lemons my process was still very intuitive and focused on visual research. I would paint a large amount of styleframes and animated tests based on the different emotions I wanted to portray. Once these visuals felt correct I would figure out how to visually weave them into the narrative. The film does not follow a traditional narrative arch, so what really helped me when forming the narrative was including the scenes of the protagonist writing her email. These emails essentially work as chapter dividers, as short breaks of reality before we dive back into her mind and memories.

Because this film was largely self-produced I had to do a lot of commissioned work on the side, which in turn slowed down the process. I did all of the animation myself - I started working on this film in 2018 and finished it in 2023, so in total 5 years.

Do you have film/art references that inform your style and inspire you?

Most of my inspiration comes from fine artists who do painting - I try to go to at least one exhibition every month. I also enjoy doing very short animation tests as they usually give me ideas that I want to develop further.

What are you currently working on? Do you have any upcoming projects we can keep an eye out for?

My film Dollhouse Elephant (2025) just started its second year of its festival circuit. It's currently available to see online on Festival Scope until July 22nd. I'm currently in the storyboarding phase of my next film Eat With Your Eyes (produced by Böhle Studios), which will hopefully premiere in 2028.
